Yes, hiring help helps. That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about turning your household responsibilities into a practice that not only achieves cleanliness and order in your home but also in your mind.
The way I used to do house work (like dishes and mopping and laundry) left me feeling absolutely miserable. Sure, I liked the outcome of a clean sink/floor/closet, but I hated the time it took and I hated how boring it was. And because I didn’t like what I was doing, I spent that time thinking about how much I hated it, what else I could be doing with my time, resenting the people I love who contributed to the mess, which led to other mindless negative thoughts like replaying conversations that annoyed me, thinking about the debt I was in, or wishing I wasn’t so unhealthy.
Doing mindless work is just that… you pay absolutely zero attention to where your mind wanders.
Even more so when you’re moving your body—those thoughts (mindless or not) turn into muscle memory.
No wonder we hate housework so much!
Fast-forward to now, with a version of me that has learned so much about thoughts and the energy they can create. I hadn’t realized until this weekend that in the process of my personal evolution, I’ve also completely evolved the way I perceive and execute the mundane… and have consequently changed how I feel doing it.
Over the weekend I mopped my floors. With two little ones in the house I can’t do it unless they promise to stay on the area rug until it’s all dry, so while I was mopping they were watching The Greatest Showman. If you haven’t seen it, I HIGHLY recommend it. As I was scrubbing the song came on, “… dreaming with my eyes wide open. Now come alive!”
And it struck me… that was exactly what I was doing. I instantly came back into my body after being swept away with my thoughts. This time, though, they were most definitely dreams instead of fearful nightmares. I was dreaming up programs, thinking about my ideal future clients, envisioning their transformations, thinking about retreats I’d love to run, and retreats I’d love to attend. I envisioned myself living my leveled-up life. In my mind I was 100% there!!
The song brought me back down to Earth. And I realized what I was doing. I was meditating. Visualizing. Dreaming. Manifesting. Praying. While mopping.
Positive energy attracts more positive energy. Like attracts like, my friends. Thinking positive thoughts can become muscle memory just as easily as negative thoughts can.
Building time into your day to meditate and visualize can be overwhelming at first. But not if you leverage what you’re already working with to aid in your transformation…. Ultimately your life. Always be on the lookout for hum-drum opportunities in your day to imagine possibilities (instead of letting your mind wander, worry, or complain)—brushing your teeth, tying your shoes, shoveling snow/cutting grass, sweeping/vacuuming, etc.
If you’re looking around, seeing darkness in every corner, and reliving it in your day to day tasks… not taking your thoughts captive… this is me singing to you: “DREAM WITH YOUR EYES WIDE OPEN! NOW COME ALIVE!!”
What is one example of something YOU do every day that you can attach some positive thinking to?… and change that drudgery FOREVER!
