Resolutions are usually about adding a new thing to your to-do list—exercise, meal prepping, journaling, you-name-it.
I like to think of the new year as an opportunity to let go of something that is no longer serving me, instead. Doesn’t that already sound a little more fun?
But I want to challenge you to think about who you are BEing instead.
DOing takes willpower, brute force effort. And I’ve got bad news for you… that runs out! Eventually, we get tired and our old habits pick right back up where we left off.
We think that if we DO [fill-in-the-blank], then we’ll BE [fill-in-the-blank].
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way… it’s the reason full gyms in January are empty again by May.
And let go of something that is getting in the way of achieving the outcome we want.
👋🏻 Letting go of fear of failure, to BE the kind of person who believes their success is inevitable.
👋🏻 Letting go of worrying about the future, to BE the kind of person who lives in the moment.
👋🏻 Letting go of control, to BE the kind of person who can delegate, outsource and scale their business.
👋🏻 Letting go of subconscious snacking, to BE the kind of person who values their health.
👋🏻 Letting go of loose boundaries, to BE the kind of person who holds their energy sacred.
Our beautiful brains are naturally made to keep us SAFE and FAMILIAR. The second piece is what really throws off the typical New Year’s Resolution. So before you go trying to add new neural networks the hard way (with brute force effort), remember, your brain is going to pull out all the stops to keep things the way they were before. Familiar is predictable, it’s safe. New is unpredictable, unsafe.
The key is to train our minds to believe that we are safe, regardless of change. We must first weaken, neutralize, and let go of the old to successfully build the new.
Fear is something I’ve been working on letting go of, and will continue to focus on as ’22 rolls in.
👉 Fear of failure
👉 Fear of letting others down
👉 Fear of totally embarrassing myself
Because what I’m most afraid of is this:
👉 Not living this one life to the extent that I am capable of
👉 Not using the gifts I’ve been given
👉 Not helping the people I’m able to help
👉 Not having the impact I’m able to have
You might see me do some new things, change up some habits, and step outside of my comfort zone. But it will be a natural response of my desire to BEcome a better/truer/higher version of myself, not as a response to a belief that I’m unworthy, incapable, overweight, unhealthy, or unsuccessful.
What is one thing you’ll be working on letting go of in ’22? If you'd like a hand, you know how to find me.
Happy New Year!
