You can have the ‘SMART’est goals;
goals that can impact millions of lives… for generations;
goals that could change your health;
goals for scaling your business and providing hundreds of jobs;
goals for traveling the world and giving your children incredible experiences;
goals for financial and time freedom…
But if you aren’t clear on why you have them there’s a high probability you won’t achieve them… that you won’t follow through.
Recently the question of WHY came up in my NeuroCoaching class.
We talked about the power of asking why and not just 2 or 3 times, more like 6 or 7. As a coach we can use the question to uncover deep, subconscious stories in many different ways—why they choose to believe thoughts that hold them back; why they don’t take action toward their goals the say they want; and why they truly want their goals.
WHY is the topic of the entire first Lesson in the digital course I created for solo-preneurs: Understand Your Brand.
Lesson 1, Uncover Your Why, explains the reasoning behind the very first thing I do when I sit down with a new branding client—I always ask, “why did you start your business?” I’m not looking for the surface level why, like more money or to impact lives. I’m looking for the big differentiation factor. I believe the more you know yourself, the more you know your business. And the more you know your business, the better you can differentiate it. And the better you differentiate your business, the less competition you’ll have.
I started Isagenix about 18 months ago as a customer and a rep—I knew right from the start why I chose to do it.
So to make sure my customers saw the success they desired, I recorded a video and emailed it to them with their first order asking them to write down why they had decided to go for it. Health? Fitness? Weightloss? And… why? Any time you try to make a change, your old habits are going to take over when you get tired and will power fades. We’ve all been down the I-want-to-lose-10-pounds road, or the I’m-sick-and-tired-of-being-sick-and-tired path. And those first two weeks feel like HELL!! You immediately grasp for any excuse not to keep going. That’s just our brains trying to keep things familiar, it’s certainly not your brain trying to keep you healthy.
I’ve read High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard a couple times and occasionally I pick it back up for motivation.
I recently stumbled upon pages 158 and it really hit home on this concept. Here’s the excerpt:
“High performers don’t keep their goals, or the why behind those goals, secret or silent. They confidently affirm their goals to themselves and others. If there is one necessity practice that seems to divide high performers and underperforms the most, it’s this one. Underperformers are often unclear about their why, and they don’t use affirmations or speak about the whys they do have.
To affirm is to declare or strongly assert something as valid or confirmed. It is saying with confidence that something is true or will happen. This is the way high performers speak about their goals and their whys. They don’t sound doubtful. They have confidence in the reasons they are working so hard, and they are proud to tell you about their purpose.”
There’s an exercise you can try on your own or with a friend. (The reason you might want a friend to help you is to push you to think outside of your comfort zone, and then some. Choose someone you trust because chances are, once you get past the surface level you’re going to uncover some subconscious beliefs getting in the way of your dreams.)
Regardless of why you’re using the why exercise, that deep-rooted truth will keep you going when the going gets tough. It will spark a new fire when you feel it’s gone out. It will help you answer other questions in your life, clarify your goals, and motivate inspired actions toward them.
Would knowing your deep WHY behind each help you achieve level-level status in your life?
